How to Read Tarot Cards: Step-by-Step Guide

Before You Begin

Reading tarot is a skill that anyone can learn. You do not need special gifts or years of study to get meaningful results - just curiosity, an open mind, and willingness to reflect honestly on what the cards reveal.

Whether you are reading physical cards or using a digital platform like Arcana, the process follows the same fundamental steps.

Step 1: Form Your Question

The quality of your reading depends heavily on the quality of your question. The best tarot questions are open-ended and focused on yourself rather than others.

Strong questions:

  • What do I need to know about my career situation right now?
  • How can I improve my relationship with my partner?
  • What is blocking me from moving forward?

Less effective questions:

  • Will I get the job? (too yes/no - tarot works better with open inquiry)
  • What is my ex thinking? (focuses on someone else's inner world)
  • When will I meet my soulmate? (asks for specific predictions)

If you are not sure what to ask, simply set an intention: "Show me what I need to see today." The cards will respond to whatever energy you bring to the reading.

Step 2: Choose Your Spread

A spread determines how many cards you draw and what each position represents. Common spreads include:

  • Single card - One card for daily guidance or a quick answer. Ideal for beginners.
  • Three-card spread - Past, Present, and Future. The most popular layout for exploring how a situation is developing.
  • Five-card spread - Adds Advice and Outcome positions to the three-card foundation. Best for complex situations that need deeper exploration.

Start with single-card or three-card readings while you are learning. You can explore all available spreads in our spread guide.

Step 3: Draw Your Cards

Shuffle the deck (or let the system draw randomly) while holding your question in mind. The cards that appear are the ones meant for your reading.

Each card may appear upright or reversed (upside down). Reversed cards often indicate blocked energy, delays, or the shadow side of the card's upright meaning. Some readers choose not to use reversals - either approach is valid.

Step 4: Read Each Card Individually

Before considering the spread as a whole, look at each card on its own:

  • What is the card's traditional meaning? Each card has established upright and reversed interpretations. Our card library covers all 78 cards in detail.
  • What does the imagery suggest to you? Even without memorising meanings, the pictures on tarot cards are designed to evoke intuitive responses.
  • How does this card relate to your question? Connect the card's themes to the specific situation you are asking about.

Step 5: Read the Spread as a Story

Once you have considered each card individually, step back and look at the spread as a narrative. How do the cards flow from one position to the next? Do you see a progression, a tension, or a resolution?

For a three-card Past-Present-Future spread, ask yourself: What happened before? What is happening now? Where is this heading? The cards should tell a coherent story about your situation.

Step 6: Reflect and Apply

A tarot reading is not useful unless you take the insights with you. After the reading, consider:

  • What surprised me?
  • What resonated most strongly?
  • Is there an action I should take based on this?
  • What would I like to explore further?

Many people find it helpful to journal about their readings to track patterns and insights over time.

Tips for Better Readings

  • Trust your first impression. Your initial reaction to a card often holds the most useful insight.
  • Context matters. The same card means different things in different positions and situations. Do not interpret cards in isolation.
  • There are no bad cards. Even seemingly difficult cards like The Tower or the Ten of Swords point toward necessary change and growth.
  • Practice regularly. Like any skill, tarot reading improves with consistent practice. A daily single-card draw is the best way to build fluency.
