What Is the Five-Card Spread?

The five-card spread builds on the familiar three-card spread by adding two positions: Advice and Outcome. This makes it ideal for situations where you need more than a simple timeline - you want actionable guidance and a sense of where things are heading if you follow that guidance.

It strikes an excellent balance between the brevity of a three-card reading and the complexity of larger layouts like the Celtic Cross. Five cards give you enough depth to explore a situation thoroughly without becoming overwhelming.

The Five Positions

Position 1: Past

The first card reveals the background influences and events that have shaped your current situation. Look for patterns, lessons, or unresolved energy from earlier experiences.

Ask yourself: What brought me here? What foundation has been laid?

Position 2: Present

The centre card shows where you stand right now - the energies, challenges, and opportunities that are active in your life at this moment. This card often confirms what you already sense but have not fully acknowledged.

Ask yourself: What is truly happening? What do I need to see clearly?

Position 3: Future

The third card projects the likely direction of events if current energies continue. As with all tarot readings, this is a tendency rather than a certainty - your choices always matter.

Ask yourself: Where is this heading? What is the probable trajectory?

Position 4: Advice

This is where the five-card spread distinguishes itself from the three-card layout. The Advice card offers practical, spiritual, or emotional guidance - something you can actively do or embody to navigate the situation wisely.

Ask yourself: What action should I take? What attitude will serve me best?

Position 5: Outcome

The final card suggests the most likely result if you integrate the advice given. Read this card in relationship to Position 4 - the outcome is not fixed, but rather shows what becomes possible when you align with the reading's guidance.

Ask yourself: What can I expect if I follow this path? What is the potential here?

How It Compares to the Three-Card Spread

The three-card spread tells you a story: beginning, middle, and end. The five-card spread tells you that same story and then offers a way forward.

  • Three cards are best for quick check-ins, simple questions, and situations where you want to understand a timeline.
  • Five cards are better when you need guidance on what to do, when a situation feels stuck, or when the stakes are high enough to warrant a fuller picture.

Think of it this way: the three-card spread describes; the five-card spread describes and prescribes.

Tips for Five-Card Readings

  • Read the narrative first. Before focusing on individual cards, scan all five from left to right. What story do they tell together? Is the energy shifting from heavy to light, or the reverse?
  • Pay special attention to the Advice card. This is the actionable heart of the reading. If you only take one thing away, let it be this card's message.
  • Look for suit patterns. Multiple cards from the same suit point to a dominant theme - Cups for emotions, Pentacles for practical matters, Swords for mental challenges, Wands for ambition and creativity.
  • Compare Advice and Outcome. If the Advice card suggests patience (such as the Four of Swords) and the Outcome is a card of success (such as The World), the message is clear: trust the process.
  • Do not ignore difficult cards. A challenging card in the Outcome position is not a punishment - it is a warning that allows you to change course. That is the gift of divination.

When to Use the Five-Card Spread

This spread is well suited for:

  • Career decisions and professional crossroads
  • Relationship questions that need more than a surface answer
  • Situations where you feel stuck and need practical advice
  • Important decisions with significant consequences
  • Monthly or seasonal check-ins where you want depth

For simpler questions, the single-card draw or three-card spread may be all you need. Not sure which to choose? Our guide on choosing the right spread can help.
